About Us < Conservation Legacy < Supported Wilderness Areas in Chattahoochee National Forest
The U.S. Forest Service is currently in the process of revising the Chattahoochee National Forest management plan, something that is done once every 10 to 15 years. One issue at stake is how much wilderness should be added to the Chattahoochee National Forest.
Despite differing opinions from other wildlife organizations, GWF continues to support the U.S. Forest Service’s proposed plan to declare an additional 34,000 acres of wilderness in the Chattahoochee National Forest. GWF believes wilderness is good for both game and nongame species of wildlife because it protects forests from roads and timber harvesting, allowing them to mature into old-growth woods which are home to a variety of animals including songbirds, bears, and deer.
