1970 Led Fight to Preserve Hurricane Creek

In the early 1970’s, a “Model Cities” project, proposed by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, threatened to destroy 1400 acres of south Georgia wetlands to build a shallow recreational lake. The Georgia Wildlife Federation took action to protect these precious wetlands.

Because the project construction would have been a violation of the Clean Water Act, a suit was filed in federal court by GWF, its local Bacon County affiliate club, and the National Wildlife Federation to stop the destruction of the wetlands. More than twenty years later, the legal process concluded with the United States Environmental Protection Agency withholding the permit to build the lake.
