About Us < Conservation Legacy < Pushed for State Wildlife Professionals in Georgia
The aggressive leadership of the Georgia Wildlife Federation was responsible for forcing candidates for Governor in the late 1930’s to campaign on a promise to hire professional wildlife biologists to manage the wildlife resources of Georgia. The first professional wildlife management staff was hired as a direct result of this action by GWF.
Those first professionals included Mr. Charlie Elliott, who later became a renowned outdoor writer, and Mr. Jack Crockford, who working with other biologists from the University of Georgia, invented and built the first tranquilizer dart gun which is used today by wildlife researchers all over the world to capture and study wildlife with the ability afterwards to release the animals unharmed.
